A Killer In Social Anxiety

January 3rd, 2008

The issue of anxiety is one that is getting larger in our society. This is not surprising to anyone with all that has taken place in the world over the past few years including terrorist activities and the war. The number of people who suffered from anxiety skyrocketed after 09/11. I know individuals who didn’t want to leave their home or their loved ones. Many people vowed to never ride on an airplane again. The added tension of our political world with our everyday life can really cause the level of anxiety to increase.

Some people are taking medications to reduce the symptoms associated with social anxiety. They are intended for depression and are used for anxiety as well. This really gives the impression that our goal in America is to control the symptoms than to cure the issue. The medication can help, but it also has tremendous side effects that make them even worse.

Social anxiety is often the result of a traumatic event. The goal should be dealing with the root of that event so the patient can move forward and not have to take medications. The longer a person takes medications that more it will alter the chemistry of their brain.
As a culture we should learn to be more open with our feelings to share our experiences and our fears. This will help us understand why people are suffering from anxiety as well as help them to overcome them.
